A self help group for people
with Colorectal Cancer (often known as bowel cancer), their families and carers. We are here for
anyone who lives in Somerset or who who is receiving their treatment in the county.
The formal objects of the Colorectal support group as stated in its charity registration are:
- ‘To preserve and protect the physical and mental health of sufferers of colorectal cancer living in Somerset
or receiving treatment at a hospital or other medical centre in Somerset by providing and assisting in the
provision of facilities, support services, practical advice, education and equipment not normally provided
by the statutory authorities’.
- ‘To advance the education of the general public in all areas relating to colorectal cancer’.
- ‘To support research, either conducted in or originated within in the U.K., aimed at improvements in the
diagnosis or treatment of colorectal cancer’
A number of activites are being organised to further these objects:
- Fundraising in support of the aims and to finance the running of the group.
- Regular meetings open to all who have suffered from or are suffering from colorectal cancer and their
partners, carers and immediate relatives. Such meetings would be designed to offer mutual support and
to spread relevant information. They may incorporate fundraising, social and / or educational events.
- A system to enable members who wish it to exchange contact details for mutual support. There is no
pressure on any member of the group to disclose any personal information to any other member.
(Any addresses, telephone numbers, e-mail addresses or other personal information held by the group will
be held on a confidential basis and used solely for the purposes of running the group.)
- People attending meetings will usually be invited to become members of the support group and to make a
donation (the suggested sum is £3 for an individual or £5 for a couple) but support meetings and other functions apart from
business meetings will generally be open to both members and non-members alike.
- We aim to publish a regular news letter.
- If requested by the statutory health authorities, the group will nominate persons to attend consultative
or advisory meetings. The group may also nominate a spokesperson or spokespeople to represent its views to the
health authorities or other appropriate bodies on matters relevant to its objects out side such meetings.
