Musgrove Hospital In Top Ten
Musgrove Park Hospital has been asked to help with the delivery of a national project that
will develop nursing
excellence for inpatients with cancer. According to the 2010 National Cancer Patient Experience survey Musgrove Park Hospital is part of one of the top ten performing Trusts nationally in providing an excellent quality of nursing care for inpatients.
As a result of this success the National Cancer Action Team (NCAT) has asked staff in Musgrove’s Cancer Centre (the Beacon Centre) to help develop a national quality improvement toolkit that will be used to improve the
experience of inpatients undergoing treatment for cancer in England.
Laura Yarnell, Project Manager (Nursing) at NCAT said, “Musgrove Park Hospital has been identified as being one
of the national centres of excellence in delivering high quality nursing care to its inpatients.
We have therefore asked staff working at the Beacon Centre to help us to understand how they deliver this
outstanding level of care to their patients.
The insight we gain from Musgrove, along with other Trusts, will help
to shape the national quality improvement toolkit which will be used to ensure all cancer patients receive the same
high quality nursing cancer care wherever they are being treated.”
Babette Fuller, Manager of the Beacon Centre at Musgrove Park Hospital said, “The nursing team at Musgrove work
incredibly hard and always strive to ensure that the patients they are caring for are treated with dignity and respect.
We are delighted that our patients rate the nursing care they receive here as excellent. We are also very honoured
that the Beacon Centre have been asked by NCAT to help develop a national quality improvement toolkit and are
pleased that the excellent standards of care our staff provide will used to help improve the experience of patients
being treated with cancer in England.”

AWARD FOR SPECIALIST CANCER NURSE
Sister Nicky Forsyth, Colorectal Nurse Lead at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton has won the prestigious Carol Baillie Nursing Award, presented by the leading charity Beating Bowel Cancer.
Nicky, who lives near Milverton and has worked at the hospital for twenty years, received a £1,000 grant to use for training or skills advancement when she attended the Awards Ceremony in the Houses of Parliament in January. She said, "This was a huge surprise to me and I was delighted. I have always loved my work, and enjoyed building relationships with my patients.
It is hugely rewarding to know that one of them was motivated enough to nominate me for this award."
Nicky's nomination was made by Annie Lanigan, who was diagnosed with bowel cancer four years ago. She said: "Nicky is an exceptional nurse who radiates calm and professionalism. She manages to respect the boundaries between patient and professional and creates a relaxed, but business-like atmosphere in which to
discuss one's problems and fears. She has never, in the four years that I have been a bowel cancer patient, made me feel that she was too busy to talk to me. Nicky is the bowel cancer patient's champion."
The photo (right) shows Nicky receiving her award from Ann Keen MP Parliamentary Undersecretary for Health Services. Dr Howard Stoate MP, who chaired the presentation, is in the background. The reception was held in the Terrace Pavilion in the House of Commons in the company of members of the House of Lords and the House of Commons.
Christopher Vickery, Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at Musgrove, said "This is terrific news and a well-deserved recognition of the great job that Nicky does. She is not only a highly qualified nurse, she is also a founder, trustee and active member of the Somerset Colorectal Cancer Support Group, a group that provides advice to patients with bowel cancer from all over Somerset. She acts as vital liaison between the committee and the hospital outside of her normal day job, and is a credit to us all. Well done Nicky!"

HOUSE OF COMMONS VISIT
Members of the Support Group visited the Houses of Parliament in October, at the invitation of Jeremy Browne,
MP for Taunton Deane and Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
We were shown around the House of Lords by Hanneke Hart, Jeremy Browne’s Political Researcher and Jeremy Browne
himself guided us around the House of Commons and the Lobbies.
It was interesting to hear it all first-hand from an MP, and now Minister in the Coalition Government.
We stood in front of the Despatch Box and Jeremy explained how the afternoon’s Parliamentary Questions and Debate
would proceed. We also watched The Speaker’s Procession and, to top it off, we were lucky enough to have been provided
with passes for the Public Gallery for the afternoon debate, so heard Vince Cable’s statement on the proposals for
students’ tuition fees and the debate that followed. It was quite something to see Parliament ‘in action’ at first hand
(what a lot of shouting goes on in the House!). It was a day that none of us will ever forget.
Thank you to Jeremy Browne and Hanneke Hart for their generosity with their time and their knowledge.
We had a wonderful day, and returned on the coach to Somerset tired out but with a fund of happy memories of our trip.

SHOOTING DAY

Support Group member Rodney Brookes organised one of his Shooting Days last Autumn, proceeds in aid of Support Group funds.
Held at Burton Dairy Farm, Curry Rival, the event raised nearly £1,000.
Support Group committee members Joe Plush, John Fielding, Hilary and Dennis Peters plus members Joan & Peter Mc Allan went
along to help with the day, It was a well attended event with dogs & owners coming from as far as South Wales.
The whole day was filled with a great atmosphere, everybody was treated to breakfast, lunch and a brilliant BBQ at the end.
To top it all the weather held out well all day.
In total 40 dogs took part in the competition and just showed us all how obedient they were. A good time was had by all.
Thank you Rodney, for your support of our fund-raising activities
