A self help group for people
with Colorectal Cancer (often known as bowel cancer), their families and carers. We are here for
anyone who lives in Somerset or who who is receiving their treatment in the county.
Somerset Colorectal Cancer Support Group was one of six charities chosen by the Taunton Soroptimists to benefit from their 2008 Swimathon.
Nicky Forsyth, Colorectal Nurse Lead at Musgrove, organised two teams of six swimmers who swam for an hour in relay.
A great time was had by all, and our group received a cheque in excess of £3,680.
Nicky is organising two more teams for next year's Swimathon which will be held on 7th & 8th February 2009
LAUNCH OF SOMERSET COLORECTAL CANCER SUPPORT GROUP AT MUSGROVE PARK
Our patient support group, for those affected by bowel cancer, has been
formally launched at Musgrove Park Hospital by the Lord Lieutenant of
Somerset, the High Sheriff of Somerset and local MP Jeremy Browne,
(see picture to the right).
The Somerset Colorectal Cancer Support Group (SCCSG) has been in
existence for just over a year, but the formal launch event celebrated:
- The opening of a new Consulting Room in the Endoscopy Suite at
Musgrove Park which has been furnished with over £2,000 raised by SCCSG.
- The presentation by SCCSG of a £20,000 Diathermy Machine for use
in Gastrointestinal Surgery at Musgrove Park.
The group exists for anyone in Somerset who suffers from bowel cancer,
their family, friends and carers, and for anyone receiving treatment for
colorectal cancer at Musgrove Park or any hospital in Somerset.
As well as raising money the group runs a range of support and
information sessions, both on an individual and group basis. Visit the
events page for details of
future activities
Mr Chris Vickery, Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at Musgrove Park said
“I am very grateful to everyone who has worked hard over the last
year or so to set up the SCCSG. I am also extremely grateful to all
those who have contributed to the charity. The equipment and furniture
purchased so far is much needed and greatly appreciated by medical staff
and patients. I hope and believe that the SCCSG will continue going from
strength to strength, supporting the care of patients in Somerset with
colorectal cancer”.
Annie Lanigan, Chair of the Charity, said “This was a very successful
event with the Lord Lieutenant, the High Sheriff and the MP being joined
by representatives from Macmillan Cancer Care, the Ileostomy
Association, members of our group, donors and supporters, as well as
representatives from Musgrove Park staff and management. An exciting
finale was the totally unexpected boost to our funds of a cheque from
the High Sheriff, David Medlock, who very generously gave me an envelope
as he was leaving.”
The picture shows Maurice Day of Wells, founder trustee of
SCCSG and former bowel cancer patient cutting the ribbon. In the

The Old Grey Dogs Jazz band played in support of Somerset Colorectal Cancer Support Group at Sanders World Garden
Centre near Highbridge recently. £230 pounds was raised from Christmas shoppers towards the diathermy machine appeal.
Donations large or small are most welcome. Cheques, payable to SCCSG, may be sent to SCCSG, c/o Taunton CVS, 57 East Reach, TAUNTON, TA1 3 EZ.

and doctoring they continue to give my nephew Mark Nuttycombe from Wells, a leukaemia sufferer."
I run with the Wells City Harriers on a Wednesday evening. Together with some of my fellow
runners we started the Wells Fun Run in 2005 and as we are doing it again this year we will also donate any
profits to the Somerset Colorectal Cancer Support Group.
