Somerset Colorectal Cancer Support Group was formed in
September 2006 to provide support to people who have been through the experience of colorectal (bowel)
cancer, their families, carers and friends.
Prior to the inaugural meeting a number of gatherings were held - at Oake Manor, near Taunton, at the West Mendip Hospital in Glastonbury and at Yeovil Hospice to assess the level of support. It became clear that there were two initial needs -
Somerset Colorectal Cancer Support Group holds meetings and social events throughout the county, organises fund-raising activities and lobbies for improved bowel cancer support services and facilities for colorectal cancer patients. The group is represented at the Colorectal Multi-disciplinary Team Annual Meetings at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton and is active at other relevant forums both in Somerset and further afield. The programme for the year includes speakers on various topics, one-to-one support and opportunities to meet other bowel cancer patients and carers to share experiences. Please see the EVENTS page for more information To date the Somerset Colorectal Cancer Support Group has raised over £30,000. Our first grant funded the furniture and decoration of a new Consulting Room for Bowel Cancer Patients in the Endoscopy Suite at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton. More recently SCCSG has purchased a state of the art diathermy machine which is already being used with excellent results by the colorectal surgeons at the hospital. The group is currently raising funds to provide improved, computerised diagnostic equipment. Mr John Alvis MBE formally launched the latest fund-raising campaign to purchase a colonoscopy imager for use at Musgrove at the last AGM of the group. We are fully supported by the Colorectal Specialist Nurses and Surgeons in Somerset Somerset Colorectal Cancer Support Group always respects individual's confidentiality. More details about the bowel cancer support group and its activities will be placed on this page as they become available. Please come back and check for updates soon. |
