Somerset Colorectal Cancer Support Group is a newly formed group
(September 2006) providing bowel cancer support to
people who have been through the experience of colorectal (bowel) cancer, their families, carers and friends.
Prior to the inaugural meeting a number of gatherings were held - at Oake Manor, near Taunton, at the West Mendip Hospital
in Glastonbury and at Yeovil Hospice to assess the level of support.
It became clear that there were two initial needs -
- a group to provide mutual support to bowel cancer patients, their families and carers
- a charity aimed at improving facilities for local treatment, care and support of colorectal cancer patients
in Somerset.
Somerset Colorectal Cancer Support Group holds meetings and social events throughout the county, organises
fund-raising activities and lobbies for improved bowel cancer support services
and facilities for colorectal cancer patients.
We are drawing up a programme of meetings for the coming year to include speakers on various topics, one-to-one support,
and to provide opportunities to meet other bowel cancer patients and carers and share experiences.
To date the group has raised over £23,000. Our first grant funded the furniture and decoration of a new Consulting Room for Bowel
Cancer Patients in the Endoscopy Suite at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton. More recently SCCSG has purchased a state of the art diathermy machine
which is already being used with excellent results by the colorectal surgeons at the hospital.
We are fully supported by the Colorectal Specialist Nurses and Surgeons in Somerset
Somerset Colorectal Cancer Support Group always respects individual's confidentiality.
More details about the bowel cancer support group and its activities will be placed on this page as they become available.
