Patient Support Training

Patients in our group provide a telephone support service to other patients. We are trained to do this by Macmillan Cancer Care,
to ensure that we provide the best possible support to other patients in a way which is appropriate both for them, and for us.

Macmillan Cancer Support will be providing a further day of training for our members, in the Spring of 2011 (at a venue near Taunton).  Anyone who would be interested in taking part in this excellent training session, please get in touch with Annie.  (Or SCCSG, via the website. Refreshments will be provided and there is no charge.

If you would like to take part in this course, with a view to supporting other patients, please contact Annie Lanigan
to register your interest, on 01460 259836 or bye email at lanigan@lanigans.co.uk.

Macmillan recommend that patients do not provide this kind of telephone support until two years after their own surgery.

Getting Support

Telephone support service for patients and their families

As patients, we all know how a diagnosis of bowel cancer can turn your life upside down.  Fear, uncertainty, emotional problems, financial worries, the prospect of tests and treatment .....  sometimes it all seems too much to cope with.

And for partners of patients, too, the problems can seem overwhelming.

This is where we can help.  As patients, and partners of patients, we know what it is like to be faced with this life-changing situation. We understand the difficulties and challenges of living with bowel cancer, which is why we are uniquely placed to help you, the patient, and your wife, husband, partner, or other member of your family

You now have an opportunity to have an individual link with one of our trained patient/partner volunteers.  We have received training from Macmillan Cancer Support and are now ready and waiting to put our skills to good use

We are not professional counsellors.  We are patients, and partners of patients, who speak from our own, personal, experience.
We have been through a variety of surgical and other treatments for bowel cancer and its effects.   We are backed up by Macmillan Cancer Support and the colorectal surgical team at Musgrove Hospital.

We work to a strict code of practise and have all signed a confidentiality agreement.  Nothing that you discuss with us will go any further.

So pick up the phone.  We’re listening.......
